If you’re missing teeth, then one of the most popular restorative dental treatments to get is dentures. They’ll provide the support your jaw needs for a strong and healthy mouth! However, now that you’re wearing them, you may find it challenging to learn to speak with them effectively. Fortunately, you can follow three essential steps to get you accustomed to talking with dentures more easily.

Step #1: Pronounce & Elongate Words

After having your new restorations fitted in your mouth, it can feel a bit odd to say certain words, much less pronounce them correctly. This is a normal occurrence, and you’ll simply have to practice phrases and sounds. Some words or letters, such as ‘S’ and ‘F’, are often more troublesome than others. It’s best to tackle these challenges early on so you can grow familiar with how your dentures feel on your gums. The key is repetition and learning the various movements of the mouth.

Step #2: Read Aloud in Private

Once you’ve grown used to pronouncing and elongating words, it’s time to practice hearing yourself talk. Grab a book or newspaper and read aloud while at home. This will give you the chance to listen to your voice with your dentures in, making you more comfortable in the process. You can also watch yourself in the mirror, like if you’re practicing a speech, so you’ll know how you look with your new smile. And if you want to make things fun, try singing in the shower!

Step #3: Speak With Friends

The best way to help you improve your overall speech with dentures is to talk with your friends and family. By speaking with someone your close to, you’ll feel much more comfortable and confident to get practice in with them. They may even identify certain words you might be struggling with and help you work on them. This will only make you much better at conversing with your restorations as well as boosting your confidence in the long run.

With constant practice, you should be able to learn talking with your new dentures in no time. And if you ever need more assistance, your dentist is always happy to help!
